Cultra Brings Another Famous Car ‘Home’

Posted on 16 May 2013 by admin

For the third year in succession the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum partnership have secured the appearance of yet another significant Northern Ireland race car for their 2013 Cultra Hillclimb Event. Sixty-two years after Cultra-born Desmond Titterington took delivery of his ‘Festival of Britain’ Allard J2 (OZ4444), Somerset man Chris Pring will bring the newly restored car to contest the North Down Borough Council supported Speed Hillclimb at the award-winning Museum on Saturday, June 1st. Cultra 2013 marks the Allard’s first competitive outing since restoration – a fitting return to the place where this important cars’ racing story first began. The ‘Festival of Britain’ moniker was coined by the Irish motoring press and refers to the cars brief appearance as the official Allard exhibit at the 1951 Festival of Britain transport pavilion, shortly before delivery to Belfast. Titterington’s masterful performances in the Allard, including winning the 1952 Leinster Trophy, lead to race seats in the Ecurie Ecosse, Jaguar and Mercedes works teams, plus several outings in a Connaught F1 car. After his last event in the J2, an outright win on the 1953 Knockagh Hill Climb in Co.Antrim, the car was sold to a Scotsman, Jimmy Braid, who took it to Calcutta to compete in the local racing scene that had sprung up there. It was another Scot, Allan Ramsay, who got the most out of the Allard in India – taking on the assorted competition, including an Alfa Monza 6C, a Jaguar 100SS and specials built along Allard lines – he set lap records and took notable wins. Later, rescued from a scrap heap and packed away in boxes, the car went into storage for many years before returning to the UK. Over the last 12 years it has undergone a fastidious restoration by The Leiter Motor Co in Dorset, under the watchful eye of marque expert Paul Weldon.

Macaulay Dominates In The Wet

Posted on 15 May 2013 by Susan

After outqualifying the entire grid by over one second, Adam Macaulay took his first ever win by dominating Round 3 of the Crowne Plaza National Formula Vee Championship at a damp Bishopscourt. Despite a brief challenge at the first corner by the fast starting Kevin Grogan, Macaulay in his Newsome Racing assisted Sheane pulled out a comfortable lead that he maintained all the way to the chequered flag. The real battle emerged behind Macaulay with Dan Polley in his LOH Motorsport Sheane and Kevin Grogan in his AvantiSport Leastone swapping places several times as they both looked for the runner up prize. A well timed dive up the inside with just 3 corners to go on the last lap saw Polley take 2nd with Grogan taking 3rd Current championship leader, Ray Moore, was involved in an incident at the end of the first lap which saw him drop to the back of the grid where he duly went about putting in a spirited fight to work his way back up to 5th  ahead of the returning Roy Tobin in a Newsome Racing Sheane. Stephen Morrin in his Leastone had his best result to date when he finished 4th overall and with it took the honours in the Dunlop B Championship. Morrin also claimed the Avantisport “Highest Grid Mover” Award. The battle for the VW Spares Rookie Championship took place further down the grid with Brendan O’Brien emerging  victorious over Justin Costello; the pair being split by less than a second at the chequered flag. Being interviewed after the race, Adam Macaulay said “It’s about time I got this win. Hopefully there are plenty more to come. I really think I can challenge for the title this season.” After Round 3, Adam Macaulay now joins Ray Moore on equal points at the top of the Crowne Plaza National Championship with Damian Murphy and Justin Costello leading the Dunlop B and VW Spares Rookie Championships respectively. Star Drive – Roy Tobin. On his return to the class after a lengthy break, he took it to former champion Ray Moore for the entirety of the race finishing only 0.2secs behind. Fastest Lap – Adam Macaulay

Status GP squad shows improved form in second Barcelona GP3 Series race

Posted on 15 May 2013 by admin

Status Grand Prix made headway with all-important tyre management in the second race of the GP3 Series season opener at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona. At this, the first GP3 race weekend with the brand-new, 400bhp, second-generation cars, all the teams found it a big challenge to maintain tyre performance throughout the races thanks to the increased power. But overnight set-up changes after a difficult first race allowed Status GP to take a step forward in Sunday’s event. China’s Adderly Fong rocketed from 23rd to 12th on the opening lap of the race, a curtain raiser to the Spanish Grand Prix. He then won a battle with Luis Sa Silva for 11th place but unfortunately had to concede two spots due to a small mistake on the final lap, and finished 13th. However, two penalties applied post-race to other drivers promoted Fong back up to 11th in the final results. Swede Jimmy Eriksson kept his starting position of 19th on the opening lap, before passing Patrick Kujala after an early safety-car period to go 18th. Once the race settled down he was setting lap times comparable with the top three, before a gearbox electronics issue forced him out. Englishman Josh Webster had moved up to 19th place, after starting from the final row following a retirement in the opening race. On one lap the Nine Group-supported driver circulated faster than all the cars in front of him, showing the close and competitive nature of the GP3 field. However, his progress was hampered by an intermittent throttle response problem which heightened his tyre deterioration, and he spun off with three laps remaining. The second round of the GP3 Series is at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit on 15th and 16th June. Before then, the teams will test at the Hungaroring on 5th and 6th June. Driver quotes: Adderly Fong: “We didn’t know how many places I would gain but it was good to run in a position that was more like what we expected. It’s an extremely steep learning curve, and the Pirelli P Zero tyres throw in an extra factor and turn it into a real tactical game. If you go off line you get on the marbles, and if you lock up or get wheelspin it takes a while to recover. Eventually my tyres went off and I made a mistake, but the race was much better overall.” Josh Webster: “I got a really good start but I was suffering with a different throttle issue to yesterday from the start. That in turn was really hurting my tyres and hampering my lap times. You can’t just relax and stay in 19th position – you’ve got to try and improve – and I ended up spinning into the gravel. It’s tough for the team but we’ll come back from it and be stronger at the next test in Hungary.” Jimmy Eriksson: “We made a lot of changes for this race, so it’s a real shame I didn’t finish because it would have been great to see if the tyres lasted the race. I was saving my tyres, being really cautious, and about halfway through the race I was beginning to feel it start to pay off, because the guys in front suddenly lost a second a lap and I kept the same pace as before. I was doing the same lap times as the drivers who were P1 and P2, but then my gearbox gave up and I couldn’t shift. That’s a shame – I’m sure a top 10 was possible.” Adderly Fong ran close to the points battle Josh Webster fends off a tight GP3 pack Jimmy Eriksson was quick but out of luck
